NEWARK, N.J. | The women's volleyball team welcomed the Highlanders of Cairn University into The Golden Dome tonight for non-conference action. Rutgers University-Newark (7-3) extended their win streak with a 3-0, 25-12, 25-14, 25-22, sweep of Cairn University (2-8).
The Scarlet Raiders came out strong against the Highlanders and hit a red hot .286 and tallied 15 kills as a team. With a two-point lead, the Scarlet Raiders opened the match up further with a 5-0 run which forced Cairn to call a timeout. The Highlanders couldn't get out of their own way as four errors aided the run for the Scarlet Raiders. An error would end the Scarlet Raider run however, Cairn wouldn't be able to hold the service for long as Rutgers University-Newark went on another 5-0 led by three kills by
Comfort Akinbo to take a 16-5 lead.
From there the Scarlet Raiders cruised to an opening 25-12 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was close at the beginning with the visitor's taking a 10-5 lead before the Scarlet Raiders called a timeout.
Analis Capobianco was due up to serve out of the timeout and surged the Scarlet Raiders to an 18-10 lead after using a 13-0 run to regain control of the match. During that stretch, Capobianco tallied four service aces while
Alexa Rivera equaled Capobianco with four kills. Rutgers University-Newark would once again cruise to a 25-14 win to take a 2-0 lead.
The third match of the night was the closest match with Cairn falling just three points shy of the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers University-Newark tied the set up at 13 before Cairn regained a two-point lead with a pair of kills by Lyntia Gwess. Down one,
Ashley Rivas took over serving duties and led the Scarlet Raiders back into the league. Once the women took the lead they would not relinquish it to the Highlanders to sweep the match.
Akinbo once again led the way with 10 kills with
Alexa Rivera close behind her with 9.
Karly Gregoire accumulated 25 assists and a pair of kills while
Brione Lockett picked up a team-high 10 digs.
