BRONXVILLE, N.Y. | The Scarlet Raiders women's volleyball team swept a non-conference tri-match this afternoon, knocking off Brooklyn College and host's Sarah Lawrence College. Rutgers University-Newark (9-3) defeated Brooklyn College (8-5), 3-1, and Sarah Lawrence College (7-3), 3-0.
Match 1: Rutgers University-Newark 3, Brooklyn College 1 (25-22, 25-22, 11-25, 25-21)Â
Comfort Akinbo exploded for 21 kills in the opening game of the tri-match while hitting a red-hot .450.
Karly Gregoire set up her teammates to the tune of 34 assists. Â
Sharon Starling finished second on the team with 9 kills on 29 attacks while
Brione Lockett continued to patrol the backline and collected 24 digs.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-1 lead early in the opening set but the Scarlet Raiders used a 12-1 run to take the lead. Lockett picked up a pair of service aces while Akinbo tallied four kills. Brooklyn College nearly tied the set up but the Scarlet Raiders were able to stay ahead to claim a 1-0 lead.Â
The second set featured a similar start as the first with the Bulldogs opening up with a lead. Akinbo caught fire and tallied five-straight kills to bring her team into the lead for good to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Brooklyn College would grab the lead in the third set and hold onto it this time as they downed the Scarlet Raiders 25-11.
With a 2-1 lead in the match, the Scarlet Raiders once again squeezed by the Bulldogs to win 25-21.
Match 2: Rutgers University-Newark 3, Sarah Lawrence College 0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-8)
Alexa Rivera led the team with 12 kills on .414 hitting while Starling was close behind with 11 on .391 hitting.Â
After an opening 25-22 win in set one, the Scarlet Raiders cruised to 25-13 and 25-8 wins in the match. In the second set with the score knotted at 10, the Scarlet Raiders used a 5-0 run to take a 15-10 lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the set.
The Gryphons came within three midway through the set. Rutgers University-Newark erupted by going on 8-0 run to win and take a 2-0 lead.
The Scarlet Raiders carried that momentum over to the third and final set where they would cruise to a 25-8 victory to extend their win streak to eight.
