NEWARK, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders continued their torrid pace this evening with a 3-0 sweep of the Bloodhounds. The win extends Rutgers University-Newark's (10-3) win streak to 9 in a row. John Jay College (1-6) lost their sixth straight and remain winless on the road.
Alexa Rivera and
Comfort Akinbo tied for the match-lead with 12 kills each with Rivera leading all hitters with a scorching .632 hit percentage. Â
Karly Gregoire led the squad with 29 assists while two-time defending NJAC Defensive Player of the Week
Brione Lockett led all players with 16 digs.
The Scarlet Raiders set the tempo in the opening set with a 25-8 win. Rutgers University-Newark had their best outing in the first set with 13 kills on 23 total attacks while hitting .565. The women got out to a 7-0 lead to start the match behind four service aces by
Karly Gregoire. The Bloodhounds burned a timeout to try to slow down the Scarlet Raiders who were firing on all cylinders. John Jay was able to get on the scoreboard with a kill from Sophia Wheelan, however, the Scarlet Raiders answered back with three points of their own.Â
With a large 20-8 lead, Rutgers University-Newark would close up the first set with a 5-0 run with four different Scarlet Raiders recording a kill.Â
The Bloodhounds found their groove in the second set and were able to take a 6-3 lead early on. The Scarlet Raiders found themselves down 10-8 before launching a 5-0 run to take a 13-10 lead.
Dahlia Shoukry tallied a kill during that run before A. Rivera secured a service ace. The teams would be knotted at 15 before the Scarlet Raiders finished out the set with a 10-2 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final set of the evening, teams would flip flop points until the Scarlet Raiders took a 6-5 lead. The women increased their lead after several errors by the bloodhounds.
Angie Santos collected her first collegiate assist tonight when she set up A. Rivera for a kill. The Bloodhounds would make a push at the end, however, the Scarlet Raiders were able to shut the door and keep their win streak intact.Â
The Scarlet Raiders will return to action on Thursday, September 26 when they head to Mahwah, NJ for an NJAC showdown with Ramapo College at 7:00 pm.Â
