MAHWAH, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders' 9-match win streak came to a close tonight at the hands of the Roadrunners of Ramapo College in a stunning five-set finish (23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 8-15). The women's volleyball team went into tonight's match on a torrid winning pace but suffered their first loss since September 5. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders down to 10-4, 1-1 while Ramapo College improved to 5-1, 2-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Rutgers University-Newark hit .148 as a squad compared to Ramapo College who hit .167.
Comfort Akinbo and
Alexa Rivera were stellar in this conference showdown, tallying 24 and 15 kills apiece but it was not enough.
The Scarlet Raiders fell behind 2-0 in the match which normally signals an easy third set for the team with the lead. Rutgers University-Newark had other plans as they rallied and took the next two sets 25-23 and 25-17 to force a fifth set.
After storming back to knot the match up at two, the Scarlet Raiders were primed to carry that momentum over to the fifth set and claim their 10th straight win. However, the Roadrunners would regroup and jump out to an 8-3 lead, a lead they never looked back from as they remain unblemished in conference play.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, September 28 when they take on USMMA and Moravian College at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.
