NEWARK, N.J. | For the first time in program history, the Scarlet Raiders men's soccer team found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline against the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College. The loss knocks the Scarlet Raiders down to 4-5 overall while the Knights improve to 4-4 overall.
The Knights were quickly into the Scarlet Raiders' final third early in the contest which set up Jonathan Schefer to have a chance on goal but his attempt would be blocked.
Ryan Caruso was the first player in the game to register a shot on target which came in the 10th minute of the game.
Just seven minutes after that shot, the Knights would crack the code to the Scarlet Raiders' defensive line and find the back of the net. Matt Flanagan dribbled around inside the 18-yard box and was able to break free long enough to hit the ball into the back of the net. Two minutes later Mount Saint Mary College would benefit from an owl goal by the Scarlet Raiders. A long free-kick would bounce off of the head of
Alec Viruet and over
Christian Andrach's head and into the goal.
The Scarlet Raiders settled into the game and had an offensive explosion at the end of the half. They fired off several shots that caused Tyler Rapp to come up with saves. Rutgers University-Newark was able to cut the lead in half when
Joe Alba sent a corner kick to the back post where
Dominik Homola headed it right back into the mix where
Ariel Parada was waiting for the easy tap-in.
Both Franco Cantania and
Joshua Breton-Jones hit the woodwork in the second half as neither team was able to break through again.
Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is a road contest against NJAC opponents, Stockton University, on Saturday, September 28 at 1:00 pm.
