Men's Soccer Draws Stockton In NJAC Test, 1-1

GALLOWAY, N.J. | A late goal, one for each team, played out to a draw in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game this afternoon. Rutgers University-Newark (4-5-1, 1-0-1) drew Stockton University (7-1-2, 1-0-1) 1-1 after going scoreless through extra time.

The Ospreys were the aggressors to open the game, tallying 10 shots in the first half alone. The game was played between the boxes for the majority of the first half with Stockton firing off three shots in the first 15 minutes before tallying seven more before the half.

The Scarlet Raiders were unable to muster a shot in the first half as they were under siege and had to withstand attack after attack from the Ospreys. Right before the halftime whistle, Dominik Homola was cautioned for a foul off of a corner kick.

Larry Abanilla of Stockton University was shown a caution card just two seconds into the second half. Ryan Silva was the first to record a shot for the Scarlet Raiders in the 51st minute which put Dino Gromitsaris to work as the shot was destined for the back of the net. Silva kept the pressure on and tallied another shot for his team just five minutes later but saw his attempt go wide of the target.

Ariel Parada was subbed into the game in the 67th minute and 11 minutes later put the Scarlet Raiders on the scoreboard. A. Parada was able to corral the ball and chip Dino Gromitsaris to tally his third goal of the season. Unfortunately, the stout Scarlet Raiders defense that withstood waves of attack in the first half by Stockton, cracked as just four minutes later as Michael Echeverria found the back of the net from 45 yards out to bring the game level.

In extra time, neither team was able to record a shot as both teams locked things up in the back to not give a crucial NJAC game away.

Andres Medina tallied seven saves in the game while Dino Gromitsaris made just one. Stockton University edged out the Rutgers University-Newark 6-4 in corner kicks. The Scarlet Raiders were outshot 18-5 in the NJAC contest.

Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is Ramapo College in another NJAC test on Wednesday, October 2 at 7:30 pm at Frederick Douglass Field.
