BROOKLYN, N.Y. | The Scarlet Raiders traveled to take on Pratt Institute (1-3) tonight in non-conference action. Rutgers University-Newark (1-3) was coming off of a loss and looked for a win tonight but fell in five sets to the Cannoneers, (20-25, 25-12, 26-24, 25-27, 13-15).
It was the home squad that opened up with a 25-20 win to open the match. The Scarlet Raiders had a small lead in the beginning, however, the Cannoneers ripped off a 9-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. The Scarlet Raiders would not go quietly as
Comfort Akinbo picked up three consecutive kills to put her team ahead, 18-16.Â
Down four, Pratt would use a 4-0 run to take the lead and not look back as they would go on to take a 1-0 lead in the match.Â
The Scarlet Raiders dominated the second set taking down Pratt, 25-12. The Cannoneers led only once and that was early on when they had a 1-0 lead. From there Rutgers-Newark would take a 5-4 lead before going on an 11-0 run.
Alexa Rivera was essential during that stretch as she picked up three kills while
Sharon Starling secured three service aces.Â
The Cannoneers were unable to climb out of the deficit as the match would be knotted at one.Â
In a close third set, the Scarlet Raiders would take a 2-1 lead in the match after scoring a 26-24 win. Rutgers-Newark carried their momentum over from the previous set as they started with seven straight points. A late surge by Pratt brought them within one point but the Scarlet Raiders were able to rebound to take a two point lead. That lead would not be secure as Pratt stormed back to knot it up at 24 before Rutgers-Newark picked up the final two points via errors.Â
Pratt would take the fourth set to force a fifth set after the Scarlet Raiders stormed back with a 9-0 run to take a four point lead. Pratt slowly clawed their way back into the game and used a 5-0 run to give them the lead and the eventual win.
With the match tied at two the Scarlet Raiders came out strong in the fifth set.
Karly Gregoire confused the Cannoneers with her serves as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Pratt would outscore Rutgers-Newark 7-1 to trail by one as the deciding set marched on. Â Gregoire and
Meredith Moore would put the Scarlet Raiders up 12-10, however, much like they did all night, Pratt used a run to secure the final set to win the match 3-2.
For the night, Rivera led the squad with 10 kills while Gregoire once again paced the way with 26 assists.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, September 7 where they will host Baruch College and Maritime College in a tri-match at the Golden Dome.Â
