Women's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match Over Baruch & Maritime

NEWARK, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders (3-3) women's volleyball program bounced back from their five-set loss to Pratt with a pair of wins over Baruch College (1-1) and Maritime (1-3) this afternoon at the Golden Dome.

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Baruch 0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-15)

In the opening set both teams held the lead at one point until Karly Gregoire collected an ace to give her team an 11-8 lead. A late surge by Baruch brought them within one, however, the Scarlet Raiders answered with a 4-0 run to put them four points away from taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Comfort Akinbo and Brione Lockett both picked up a point for their team during that run.

The Scarlet Raiders jumped out in front quickly in the second set. The Bearcats would claw their way back into the set but not before Alexa Rivera gave the lead back to the Scarlet Raiders. With a two-point lead, the women burst open a 7-0 run to take a 22-13 lead. Saniyiah Richardson tallied a pair of service aces while Rivera and Sharon Starling both picked up a kill.

Much like the second set the Scarlet Raiders were never in danger as they jumped out to a 17-8 lead and never looked back as Comfort Akinbo picked apart the Bearcat defense.

Akinbo led the team with 15 kills with Rivera following close behind with 11. Gregoire passed her way to 31 assists while Brione Lockett defended the backline with a team-high 15 digs.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Maritime 1 (25-11, 25-27, 25-8, 25-10)

The Scarlet Raiders came out in their second match and dominated the Privateers. Rutgers-Newark cruised to a 25-11 win after using an 11-0 run early in the set. Gregoire picked apart Maritime's defense with her serves en route to six service aces.

Maritime would narrowly defeat the Scarlet Raiders in the second set with a 27-25 victory. Eliana Rivera and Dhalia Shoukry joined in on the action by both picking up a kill to help extend Rutgers-Newark's lead midway through the set. It was a 5-0 run down the stretch for Maritime that set them up for success.

Rutgers-Newark would bounce back in the final two sets to pick up their second win of the night.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action, Tuesday, September 10 where they will travel to take on College of Saint Elizabeth.
