Women's Basketball Season Comes To An End Against Stockton

Box Score

GALLOWAY, NJ | The women's basketball team wrapped up their 2019-2020 season Wednesday night with a loss to Stockton University. A long season comes to an end as the seniors play the final game of their collegiate career. The Scarlet Raiders came out of the gates with a strong performance in the first half. It was a different story in the second as The Ospreys extended their lead and never looked back en route to an 84-54 victory.

Rutgers-Newark (4-21, 2-16) lost the season finale after a turnover happy third quarter that left them in too deep of a hole to climb out of. Brielle Mattiello closed out her season with a team-high 12 points connecting on one shot from beyond the arc. Mattiello tallied 70 points total for the season. Hannah Ashby joined the double-digit crew as she put up 10 points and tied with a game-high five steals. Ashby played the last game of her senior year and ends her season with a team-high 237 points, and 123 rebounds.

Stockton University (10-15, 5-13) was led by Lajerah Wright as she could not be stopped. Wright took over the game with her efficient scoring ability, shooting 9-of-16 from the field for a game-high 23 points. Her performance proved to be the difference in the game. With 10 rebounds, Wright earned herself a triple-double. She was dominant from inside the paint and looked like she could not be stopped. Raquel Harris-Scott, Emily Donzanti, and Ionyonia Alves all scored in double figured with 14, 10 and 10, respectively.

Holding a four-point lead in the second quarter the Ospreys went on an 8-0 run to extend the lead and pull away from the Scarlet Raiders who continued to hang around.

Going into the third quarter the Scarlet Raiders trailed 42-31. The Scarlet Raiders showed great effort on the defensive end, forcing 10 turnovers. They limited the number of turnovers they made offensively and had the game in reach. But after a costly seven turnovers in the third quarter, they let the margin grow larger and larger until it was out of their grasp.

Comfort Akimbo closed her season out with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting. She pulled down four boards and added an assist. Louise Ann Borja led the squad with a team-high six rebounds and Elisha India Cross was the main facilitator with two assists.

The Scarlet Raiders will recruit a new crop of freshmen after they wish good luck to their graduating seniors and congratulate them on their terrific careers. They will look to regroup and come back strong for the 2020-2021 season.
