Offense Stalls As #RUNWVB Falls To Kean, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers University-Newark took the court for the first time in a week tonight when they hosted Kean University in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action. The Scarlet Raiders fell in straight sets to their NJAC foes, 25-18, 25-18, 25-13. With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders dropped to 4-10, 1-4 while the Cougars improved to 10-9, 3-2.

As a team, the Scarlet Raiders hit .157 with 30 kills while Kean hit .286 with 38 kills. Leading the way for Rutgers-Newark was Alexa Rivera with 10 kills on 32 attacks. Following close behind was Sharon Starling with 9 kills. Jacklyn Shrubsall once again finished as the team leader with 26 assists. Saniyiah Richardson tallied a team-high 13 digs while Meredith Moore secured the lone block for the Scarlet Raiders on the night. 

The opening stanza was evenly matched, with both squads answering the other teams' point with one of their own until it leveled out a 9-9. Kean found their stride and used a 7-2 run to take a 16-11 lead. Behind a kill by Starling and a service ace by Richardson, the Scarlet Raiders cut the lead down to one, 18-17. The Cougars went on another run, 7-1, to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

The second set played out similarly to the first whereas the Scarlet Raiders and Cougars were tied at 11 before Kean used an 8-1 run to take a large lead that they wouldn't surrender.  

In the third set, Rutgers-Newark struggled to get their offense going as they hit just .063 as a squad with 8 kills. Kean produced their best set of the evening, hitting .344 as a team with 14 kills to close out the match with a 25-13 win. 

The Scarlet Raiders return to the court on Thursday, October 14 where they will face off against another NJAC foe, Ramapo College, at 7:00 pm in Mahwah, NJ.
