#RUNWVB Ends Losing Skid With Five-Set Win Over Albright

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad found their way back into the win column this morning with a five-set thriller over Albright College. The Scarlet Raiders took down the Lions, 3-2 (20-25, 27-25, 18-25, 25-15, 15-13), to improve to 5-11 as Albright dropped to 5-7.

As a team, the Scarlet Raiders hit .157 and tallied 50 kills. Sharon Starling once again paced the team with 17 kills while Jaclyn Shrubsall finished with 10. Shrubsall led the team with 24 assists, however, it was the tandem of Alexa Rivera and Saniyiah Richardson keeping rallies alive with 23 and 20 digs, respectively. Eliana Rivera and Meredith Moore caused problems for the Lions' attackers all morning as they tallied four blocks each.

In the first set, the Scarlet Raiders found themselves behind early as the Lions went on a 9-1 run to give them a 12-4 lead. The Scarlet Raiders wouldn't back down as they responded with five straight points to cut the lead down to three. Kaiel Maynor led that run with a pair of service aces. Leading by just a pair, Albright used a 4-1 run down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

This morning's match was even through every set played with neither team able to pull away and that was no different in the second set. Down 18-14, the Scarlet Raiders scored four unanswered to knot the set up at 18. Richardson and Shrubsall would then aid the Scarlet Raiders during a 4-0 run which put Rutgers-Newark ahead 24-22. Albright pushed the score past 25, however, a pair of errors gave the Scarlet Raiders the win.

Rutgers-Newark had their worst performance of the morning in the third set as they secured just seven kills and hit 0 for the set. After flip-flopping, the Lions eventually gained control to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Once again, the Scarlet Raiders came out strong with their backs against the wall. With an 11-7 lead, Maynor began to serve and put the Scarlet Raiders on a 7-0 run. Rivera, Moore and Shrubsall all tallied a kill in the plays leading up to the Maynor service ace. With a 17-7 lead, the Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on as they closed out the set to win 25-15.

In the 5th and final set, each team matched the other until late in the set when Starling put the Scarlet Raiders up 13-12. An attacking error gave Rutgers-Newark match point which set up Starling to slam the door shut to end their losing skid.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, October 19 when they host William Paterson at 7:00 pm.
