Barrientos Hammers Home The Game Winner Against No. 5 Montclair

MONTCLAIR, NJ | Juan Barrientos showed up in the biggest moment of the season for the Scarlet Raiders, scoring the game-winner in the 109th minute of the second extra-time against No. 5 Montclair University. The Scarlet Raiders picked up the 3-2 win to improve to 12-4-3, 5-1-3 while the Red Hawks suffered their first NJAC loss of the season to fall to 16-2-1, 8-1.

In the second slot for most of the season, the Scarlet Raiders went into tonight's game with a must-win attitude as they could have fallen from the two spot to the fifth spot depending on the outcomes of other games within the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Fortunately, none of the other outcomes mattered as the Scarlet Raiders locked up the first-round bye with the win over Montclair tonight.

Dias was aggressive on the offensive side of the ball tonight, leading the team with six shots, putting four of them on target. Joe Alba and Franco Catania tallied three each with two finding their mark. Between the pipes, Andres Medina made three saves for his team while facing 16 shots.

After a scoreless first half, the Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half. Just five minutes later, Dias found the back of the net to knot the game up at one with 30 minutes remaining. One of the nation's top goal scorers, Franco Catania, put the Scarlet Raiders up 2-1, briefly, with a stunner of a goal, beating Andres Lezme from 20 yards out.

Unfortunately, the Scarlet Raiders' lead wouldn't last long as just two minutes later Montclair tied the game up. After the quick exchange of goals, the game remained quiet for the rest of regulation.

With a scoreless first extra-time, the Scarlet Raiders were looking at the No. 3 seed in the NJAC Tournament and a first-round game if the game ended in a draw. Barrientos had other plans as the ball seemed to have never touched the ground until it fell to the foot of Barrientos who hammered a low shot into the right corner for the game-winning goal.

The win secured the No. 2 seed in the NJAC Tournament where the Scarlet Raiders will get a first-round bye and await the winner of the No. 3 seeded Kean Cougars vs No. 6 seed Lions of The College of New Jersey. The NJAC Semifinal round will take place on Wednesday, November 3 at 7:30 pm at Frederick Douglass Field.
