Horton Leads #RUNWBB Past York, 74-68

JAMAICA, NY | Samiyah Horton poured in 23 points as the Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team bounced back this evening with a 74-68 win over the Cardinals of York College.

The Scarlet Raiders (1-1) shot 39% from the floor and 25% from three-point range while forcing 38 turnovers. Aiding the Scarlet Raiders' first win of the season was their ability to limit their turnovers, handing the ball to York just 16 times tonight. Syncere Lambert was active on both ends tonight, registering 15 points and a team-high eight steals in the win. Elisha India Cross led the team in both rebounds (7) and assists (8) while adding 14 points.

After scoring 16 points in the opening stanza to give themselves a one-point lead over their competitors, the Scarlet Raiders scored 21 points in the second which gave them some breathing room heading into the half. York cut the lead down to just two in the third quarter, however, used an 8-0 run to further stretch their lead. In the fourth, York kept the pressure on which forced the Scarlet Raiders to take the next step, which they did.

Rutgers-Newark pushed their lead out to 10 before York made a comeback attempt that fell short.

Up Next:
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday when they hit the road to clash with the College of Mount Saint Vincent. In that game, it will be the house divided battle as head coach Ashley Cieplicki will take on her husband.
