Champions Once Again; #RUNMBB Win John K. Adams Championship Over Utica

NEWARK, NJ | John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic Most Valuable Player, Quincy Rutherford, led the Scarlet Raiders to a 66-48 win over Utica in the championship game at The Golden Dome this afternoon.

The Scarlet Raiders (2-0) once again used their suffocating defense to stifle the Pioneers' offense, holding them to just 48 points and 35% shooting from the floor. Rutherford nearly had himself another 20 point outing, coming up just short with a game-high 19 points. Abe Kromah, the other Scarlet Raider named to the All-Tournament Team, added 12 points to go along with his team-high six rebounds. BJ Honis found his open teammates to the tune of three assists while adding 11 points of his own.

Utica (1-1) was led by Thomas Morreale's 9 points in the loss. Morreale was named to the All-Tournament Team after he poured in 31 points in the win over Eureka. Damien Call paced the team with eight rebounds while Darius Hopkins paved the way with two steals.

The Scarlet Raiders found their stride early on and used that momentum to jump out to a 21-9 lead with just eight minutes remaining in the half. The Pioneers cut the lead down to 9 before Dante Ralph quickly put the Scarlet Raiders back up by double digits with three minutes to go. Rutgers-Newark took a 12 point lead into the half.

Out of the break, the Scarlet Raiders kept their foot on the gas and eventually took a 22-point lead after Travis Miles converted on a three-point bucket. Utica struggled to find an open shot as the Scarlet Raiders continually made the Pioneers take low percentage shots. With a double-digit lead, the Scarlet Raiders locked in and rode their defense to the championship win for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

Up Next:
The Scarlet Raiders will look to remain unblemished when they hit the road for the first time this season to take on Centenary University on Wednesday, November 17 at 7:00 pm.
