Oliveira’s 2nd Half Heroics Secure Win For The Scarlet Raiders

NEWARK, NJ | After a game that included severe weather and several delays, the Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team beat Westminster College, 3-0, to move on in the ECAC tournament.

In a first half in which the Scarlet Raiders took control of the game, Franco Catania created three great opportunities but saw no success when finishing.

With just over 22 minutes remaining in the first period of play, the game was suspended due to weather concerns in the area, with the score still deadlocked at zero.

After over two hours of delays, the ball got rolling again to finish off the first half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders continued their fierce attacking play, but for the first 20 minutes of the half, still no side was able to find a goal.

Scarlet Raiders Head Coach, Kevin East made two key substitutions as Anthony Oliveira and Miguel Sencion entered the game.

With his first shot of the game, Oliveira placed the ball top corner, leaving no chance for the Westminster keeper to make a save, giving the Scarlet Raiders the lead.

In the final minutes of the game, Oliveira continued his great attacking play and set up Brandon Castro, who put the Scarlet Raiders up 2-0. Oliveira put a stamp on his brilliant performance adding another assist on the third and final Scarlet Raiders goal of the afternoon, scored by Miguel Sencion.

The Scarlet Raiders finished the game with 22 total shots, nine of which found the frame and Franco Catania led the team with four shots.

The men's soccer team will return to action tomorrow, November 14, for the ECAC Pod 1 Championship game at 1:00pm, at Frederick Douglass Field. The men will await the winner of Misericordia University and Penn State Behren for the Pod 1 Championship game.
