Lights Out Shooting By Rutherford Lifts #RUNMBB Past No. 24 NJCU

JERSEY CITY, NJ | Quincy Rutherford exploded for a career-high 32 points against No. 24 ranked New Jersey City University tonight in their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game of the season. The Scarlet Raiders knocked off the Gothic Knights 68-58 at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center.

Rutherford was lights out from behind the arc tonight, shooting 8-for-11, a school record, and converting all six of his free throws. Dante Ralph cleaned the boards to the tune of a team-high seven while adding 10 points. BJ Honis paced the squad with five assists while Abe Kromah finished with 10 points. Rutgers-Newark (4-1, 1-0) shot a red-hot 48% from the floor including an outstanding 56% in the opening half. NJCU (3-2, 0-1) was held to their lowest scoring output of the season with just 58 points on 41% shooting.

Halfway through the opening half, the Scarlet Raiders went on a 7-0 run to put them up 20-12. The Gothic Knights chipped away at that lead until they were down just two points with 7:08 to go. At that point, the Scarlet Raiders stepped on the gas and stretched their lead out to double digits, when Jamir Patterson hit a layup to put his team up 10. Over the final two minutes of the half, Rutherford cashed in on a pair of three-point baskets which almost sent Rutgers-Newark into the half with a 12 point lead. Jason Battle of NJCU answered with a three of his own to cut the lead down to 9 before heading into the locker room.

The Scarlet Raiders came out of the half and pushed their lead out to 13, however, that lead wouldn't last as NJCU cut the lead down to three with 8:57 left in the game. Rutherford and Kromah responded with a three-point basket and a jumper to keep NJCU at bay. From there, defense took precedent as points became hard to come by. The Rutgers-Newark defense locked down the Gothic Knights and held them to eight points over the final seven minutes of play to seal the win.
