Cold Shooting Spoils #RUNWBB Season Opener

BROOKLYN, NY | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team took on Brooklyn College tonight to open their 2021-22 campaign. The Scarlet Raiders stumbled in their opener as they fell to the Bulldogs, 84-46.

The Scarlet Raiders (0-1) got off to a slow start and shot just 18% from the floor in the opening quarter of play. Conversely, the Bulldogs (1-0) shot a red-hot 64% from the floor en route to a 27 point opening quarter. Ebony Odom Barnes, despite the loss, had a quality outing for her squad, going 7-9 from the floor for a team-high 18 points. Defensively, Odom Barnes also clamped down her opponents and picked up a game-high six steals. Samiyiah Horton and Fancy Janvier each added four rebounds while Eliana Huancaya paced the way with four assists.

As a team, the Scarlet Raiders forced 25 turnovers by the Bulldogs and scored 14 points off of those turnovers. Brooklyn College took advantage in the paint, scoring 38 points from the painted area. The Bulldogs also dominated the boards and held a 37-18 edge in rebounds on the night. Rutgers-Newark seemed to settle into the game in the second and third quarters, however, the offensive output by the Bulldogs coupled with their ability to limit second-chance opportunities stifled any Rutgers-Newark comeback attempt.
