Honis Scores Career-High To Fend Off Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ | BJ Honis scored a career-high to lift the Scarlet Raiders past Ramapo College, 57-48, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest tonight to remain unbeaten in the conference. 

Rutgers-Newark (7-2, 4-0) used stout defense to fend off Ramapo (1-6, 0-4) tonight on the road as the Scarlet Raiders forced 21 turnovers. Quincy Rutherford finished with 12 points in 31 minutes while Jamir Patterson and Abe Kromah each added 10 points. Not only did Honis lead the team in scoring, he also led the way with a team-high seven rebounds. 

The Scarlet Raiders used a 35-point opening half to head into the locker room with a 15 point lead after holding the Roadrunners to just 20 first-half points. The large halftime lead was fueled by an early 14-2 run as Ramapo struggled to unlock the defense of the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark, behind five points from Rutherford, outscored the Roadrunners 10-5 in the final three minutes of the first half. 

In the second half, Honis gave the Scarlet Raiders their largest lead of the game (16) when he converted on a jumper. Rutgers-Newark wouldn't hold onto their large lead for long as Ramapo went on a 17-2 run to cut the lead down to one with 3:37 remaining. Kromah converted a pair from the charity stripe to keep the Scarlet Raiders in the lead as Ramapo managed just six points over the final three minutes.

The men will look to extend their win streak to four in a row on Saturday when they host Rutgers University-Camden at 8:00 pm.
