Men's Basketball Downs Rutgers-Camden in Season Opener, 67-48

NEWARK, NJ | After 331 days of no sports here at Rutgers University-Newark the men's basketball team stepped on their home court and took on Rutgers University-Camden in New Jersey Athletic Conference action. The Scarlet Raiders bounced back from a slow start at The Golden Dome and went on to defeat the Scarlet Raptors 67-48.

For the Scarlet Raiders, it was Jamir Patterson who led the way with a 15 points while Quincy Rutherford finished with 13. Darris Watkins kicked off his senior campaign with a career-high 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting which helped propel the Scarlet Raiders over the Scarlet Raptors. Raymond Mundrick recorded a 10-point 10-rebound double-double in his first collegiate game. Mundrick was crucial in limiting Rutgers University-Camden's second chance opportunities which gave the Scarlet Raiders a healthy 42-35 edge in rebounds.

On the other side, the Scarlet Raptors were led by Sam Dolphin who tallied 10 points while Gavin Henry added 9 of his own. Dolphin also paced the Scarlet Raptors with seven rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) trailed for the early portion of the game after coming out sluggish. However, after they were able to get their feet wet, they began to slowly take over the game. Rutgers University-Newark erased an eight-point deficit halfway through the opening stanza and brought it within three, 17-14, on a Patterson layup.

Rutgers University-Camden (0-1, 0-1 NJAC) looked strong out of the gate and had the Scarlet Raiders on their heels for a majority of the first half. Late in the first half, the Scarlet Raptors began to lose steam which sent the Scarlet Raiders into the locker room with all the momentum they would need.

Out of the break, the Scarlet Raiders quickly grabbed the lead on a jumper by Abe Kromah to put them up two, 32-30. The Scarlet Raptors wouldn't give up so easily as they once again took a two-point lead. After scoring their 34th point, the Scarlet Raptors got cold and remained scoreless for seven minutes.

This opened the door for the Scarlet Raiders who took full advantage and pushed their lead out to double digits. Kromah put the Scarlet Raiders up 44-34 with 12:10 remaining and they never looked back. The Scarlet Raiders used their suffocating defense to shut down any offensive attack the Scarlet Raptors were able to muster up.

The Scarlet Raiders' dominance inside the paint was the difference in tonight's contest. Rutgers University-Newark tallied 44 points in the paint while Rutgers University-Camden tallied 22.

Rutgers University-Newark will head south tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2:00 p.m. as they look to complete the season sweep of the Scarlet Raptors.
