Men's Volleyball Drops CVC Contest Against Kean, 3-1

UNION, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team was unable to recreate their dominating performance from last night as Kean University evened the season series at one with a 3-1 win in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) play.

Kean University 3, #5 Rutgers University-Newark 1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-27, 23-25)

Rutgers University-Newark (5-2, 4-2 CVC) was once again led by Andrew Zaleck's 22 kills followed by 15 from Arvind Kumar and 10 from Robert Long. Daniel Quay was effective on the offensive side tonight, tallying eight kills on 13 attacks with no errors for a hitting percentage of .615. Justin Tuohy paced the team in both assists (51) and blocks (5) in the four-set loss to the Cougars.

Kean University (4-1, 3-1 CVC) earned a match-high 26 kills from Jared Ray on 51 total attacks. Derek Au led the way with 43 assists and 12 digs while Duncan Beilke picked up six total blocks.

The Scarlet Raiders continued their strong play from last night in the opening set with a 25-18 victory. Quay recorded back-to-back kills to push their lead out to 14-9 before a 5-0 run down the stretch secured the opening set win for Rutgers-Newark.

After flip-flopping points for the majority of the second set, the Cougars dug their feet in and took control with a 3-0 run to gain control of the set, 22-18. The Cougars scored their 24th point and the Scarlet Raiders scored two unanswered before the door was slammed shut, knotting the match at one.

A mid 7-1 run by the Scarlet Raiders had the makings of a Rutgers-Newark win, however, the Cougars would not bow out so easily on their home court. The Scarlet Raiders were on game point before Kean ripped off a 7-0 run which was aided by attacking errors by Rutgers-Newark which swung momentum in favor of the Cougars to give them a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, it was more back-and-forth play all the way to the end and a 4-2 run by Kean closed out the set and gave the Cougars the four set win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, March 23 against Kean at 7:00 p.m. for another CVC battle.
