#9 Men's Volleyball Drops Second Match to Kean, 3-1

NEWARK, NJ | The #9 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball squad suffered their second-straight loss to the Cougars of Kean University tonight, 3-1, in another Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) matchup at The Golden Dome.

Kean University 3, #9 Rutgers University-Newark 1 (24-26, 27-25, 21-25, 23-25)

#9 Rutgers University-Newark (5-3, 4-3) had a team-high 20 kills from Andrew Zaleck tonight, however, that came paired along with 15 attacking errors for a hitting percentage of .109. Arvind Kumar recorded the highest hit percentage (.261) for the Scarlet Raiders this evening and finished second on the team with 11 kills. Nicholas Arce-Cox and Daniel Quay were active at the net tonight as they each picked up four total blocks. Justin Tuohy once again led his team in assists with 35 while adding three block assists to his name.

Kean University (7-3, 6-1) was led by Jake Milnazik's 20 kills while Jared Ray followed that up with 14. Ian Capp kept rallies alive for the Cougars with a match-high 12 digs while also leading his team with 29 assists.

The Scarlet Raiders knew they had a tough task ahead of them tonight and came out strong to open the match. Tuohy served up an ace to push the Scarlet Raiders out to an 11-6 lead before an attacking error by the Cougars made it a six-point game. The Cougars tried to claw their way back into the game with a 3-0 run, however, the Scarlet Raiders answered with five points to once again extend their lead to six. Kean was able to gain footing and climb out of their early deficit to tie the game up at 23. The Scarlet Raiders would give themselves set-point but were unable to close it out as Kean scored three unanswered to steal the opening set from Rutgers-Newark.

In the second set, it was the Scarlet Raiders that needed to climb out of a hole and they did just that. Trailing 15-9, Travis Emenaker recorded back-to-back service aces which ignited a 6-1 run for the Scarlet Raiders which cut the lead down to just a single point. Robert Long then served up nice serves that forced attacking errors by the Cougars which knotted the game up at 18. Once again, the set came down to the final moments, and this time, it was the Scarlet Raiders who would prevail with a 7-3 run.

Another battle ensued in the third set although things initially weren't going Rutgers-Newark's way. They trailed early on before battling back to cut their deficit down to a pair. However, the Scarlet Raiders weren't able to go on a big enough run to take momentum away from the Cougars who would go on to win the third set and take a 2-1 lead in the match despite a late surge from the Scarlet Raiders.

Neither team was able to establish themselves in what would turn out to be the final set until late in the set. With the set tied at 16, the Cougars broke away with a 3-0 run which ultimately was enough to keep the Scarlet Raiders at bay on their home court as they went on to pick up their second win over the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers University-Newark will head to Union, NJ for their final match with Kean tomorrow night at 6:00 pm with hopes on leveling the season series at two apiece.
