Late Surge Not Enough To Lift Scarlet Raiders Past Rowan

GLASSBORO, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team squared off against Rowan University this afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader. After scoring 9 runs in the top of the 9th the Scarlet Raiders ran out of steam and fell 14-11 before dropping the second contest 5-2.

Game 1: Rowan University 14, Rutgers University-Newark 11

Rutgers University-Newark (1-4, 1-4 NJAC) was led offensively by a 3-for-5 performance from Andre Tirso. Tirso also added 3 RBI and scored two runs. Joining Tirso in the multi-hit group was Ryan Lebow who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Rowan (7-2, 6-0 NJAC) had an offensive outburst from Alex Kokos who went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI and scored 3 runs. Jared Marks went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Rowan jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings. The Scarlet Raiders didn't place a tally on the board until the top of the 4th when Tirso collected his first RBI with a double which brought home Jamir Ramos

The Profs further extended their lead with three runs in the bottom of the 4th.

Rutgers-Newark scored again in the top of the 6th when Armando Alvarez hit a solo home run to cut the lead down to 8-2.

Rowan had another explosive inning in the bottom of the seventh when they further extended their lead with six runs.

During their last at-bat, the Scarlet Raiders' offense soared as they tallied 9 runs in a last-ditch comeback attempt. Down 14-2 the Tirso hit a single to get his squad going before an error put Chris Suleski on the bases while was followed by a Robert Gonzalez walk. Kyle Johnson's patience paid off at the dish as he was walked which brought in a run.

Lebow and Angelo Mascolo each hit singles which scored three runs combined. Following that the Scarlet Raiders continued to capitalize on errors by the Profs, however, the offensive output eventually came to an end three runs short for the Scarlet Raiders.

Game 2: Rowan 9, Rutgers University-Newark 1.

Rutgers University-Newark (1-5, 1-5 NJAC) received a hit from Tirso and Lebow as the two lone hits for the Scarlet Raiders in game two.

Once again the Profs got off to a hot start with four runs in the first two innings. The Scarlet Raiders prevented the shutout in the top of the 6th when a fielding error allowed Lebow to cross the dish.

Rowan responded with four runs in the bottom of the 6th before rounding out the scoring in the bottom of the 8th with a run to cap off their 12 hit outing.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Thursday when they host Montclair University at 3:30 pm at Weequahic Park.
