Baseball Drops NJAC Contest to Montclair, 12-2

NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers University-Newark dropped their sixth straight game this afternoon after falling, 12-2, to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponents, Montclair State University at Weequahic Park.

Rutgers University-Newark (1-6, 1-6 NJAC) scattered seven hits in the loss to Montclair State. Lisandro Ulerio returned to the lineup for the first time this season and went 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI and was left on base three times. Michael Masino also went 1-for-4 with an RBI. On the mound, Michael Matusz (0-1) tossed 2.2 innings and allowed six earned runs with two strikeouts and five walks.

Montclair State University (12-4, 4-3) was led by Michael Murphy who finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Jason Moore went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Sean Lewandoski (2-0) picked up his second win of the season in 7.0 innings of action. He allowed six hits and struck out four batters.

After a pair of scoreless innings as rain fell on the diamond, Montclair opened up their scoring ledger with six runs in the top of the third. The Scarlet Raiders did their best to match the Red Hawks but were only able to muster up a pair of runs. Jamir Ramos doubled to center field to put himself in scoring position immediately. Ryan Lebow then moved Ramos over to third before Ulerio hit an RBI triple to left-center to tally the first run for the Scarlet Raiders. Masino then singled up the middle to score Ulerio from third.

Rutgers University-Newark was unable to get their bats going for the remainder of the game as they would be held scoreless down the stretch while the Red Hawks added six more runs to their tally.

The Scarlet Raiders will return to action on Saturday, April 17 where they will host Kean University for another NJAC doubleheader at Weequahic Park starting at 11:30 am.
