Baseball Struggles Against Kean, 5-3, 17-1

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball squad hosted Kean University at Weequahic Park for a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader. The Cougars of Kean University shut down the Scarlet Raiders, 5-3 and 17-1 in the twin bill.

Game 1: Kean University 5, Rutgers-Newark 3

Rutgers University-Newark (1-7, 1-7 NJAC) scattered 9 hits in the 5-3 loss to Kean in game one. The Scarlet Raiders also played a clean game defensively as they didn't commit an error while Kean tallied three blunders. Matthew Rypkema led the way, going 3-for-5 with an RBI while Lisandro Ulerio, Andre Tirso, and Robert Gonzalez all added a pair of hits. Luis Matias (0-3) tossed 7.0 innings and allowed five runs and struck out 8 batters on 106 pitches.

Kean University (10-8, 5-4 NJAC) scored five runs on 14 hits and received four hits from Frank LoGiudice. Phil Marcantonio led the team with a pair of RBIs and finished 1-for-4 on the day. Justin Diefenbach (3-0) pitched 6.2 innings and struck out four batters and allowed just one earned run.

The Cougars quickly jumped on the board scoring two runs in each of the first two innings to set the Scarlet Raiders back 4-0. Nathaniel Nunez was down 0-2 in the count before he was hit by the pitch to put him over on first. Ulerio was then walked and both Nunez and Ulerio advanced on a passed ball. Michael Masino would score Nunez on a sacrifice fly to right-center to put a tally on the scoreboard for the Scarlet Raiders.

After a pair of scoreless innings, the Scarlet Raiders would strike again in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead in half. A double steal by Robert Gonzalez and Nunez advanced each runner one base before a throwing error by the catcher allowed Gonzalez to score.

The Cougars answered with a run in the top of the 7th to push their lead back out to three before the Scarlet Raiders tallied their final run of the game in the bottom of the 7th.

Game 2: Kean University 17, Rutgers-Newark 1

Rutgers University-Newark (1-8, 1-8 NJAC) recorded just three hits in the second game. Masino, Kyle Johnson, and Ryan Lebow were the trio to record a hit. Malcolm Gilchrist (0-2) pitched 1.1 innings and walked three batters and allowed five runs with 51 pitches.

Kean University (11-8, 6-4) had an offensive explosion in game two as they recorded 21 hits and 17 runs. Christian Pellone went a perfect 6-for-6 with 5 RBI while Collin Kiernan (2-2) pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just one earned run with 11 strikeouts on 106 pitches.

Once again the Cougars started early, except this time they didn't stop scoring after the first two innings. Kean scored at least one run in the first five innings highlighted by a five-run 4th inning.

The Scarlet Raiders finally got on the board in the bottom of the 7th when Johnson hit an RBI double to right-center to score Christian Masters who reached first earlier on a wild pitch strikeout. The Cougars would go on to score another pair of runs in the top of the 9th to cap their scoring for game two.

Rutgers University-Newark returns to action on Sunday, April 17 when they travel to Montclair, NJ to take on Montclair in another NJAC contest.
