Losing Skid Extends To 9 As RUN Baseball Falls To Montclair

MONTCLAIR, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball squad suffered their 9th-straight loss of the season to Montclair State University to end three days of four games. The Scarlet Raiders fell to the Red Hawks 15-0 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Rutgers University-Newark (1-9, 1-9 NJAC) tallied five hits in the game with the five hits being scattered between four players. Robert Gonzalez led the team going 2-for-3 while Michael Masino, Andre Tirso, and Matthew Rypkema recorded the three other hits for the Scarlet Raiders. Colin Thompson (1-2) got the start for Rutgers-Newark and tossed 1.2 innings of action and allowed 8 hits on 37 pitches.

Montclair State University (15-4, 7-3 NJAC) was led by Peter Cosentino who finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. E.J. Melendez (2-0) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out six batters.

The Red Hawks opened with seven runs in the bottom of the 1st which put the Scarlet Raiders in a hole they were unable to climb out of.

Gonzalez singled up the middle in the top of the 5th, however, after Chris Suleski popped out, Ryan Lebow grounded into a double play to end any scoring chance that the Scarlet Raiders had. He tallied his second hit in the top of the 7th and once again it looked as though Rutgers-Newark would have a chance to score a run. Masino and Gonzalez would eventually be stranded on second and third as Lebow struck out swinging.

Montclair would score at least one run in innings four through seven highlighted by a three-run 4th inning.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Thursday, April 22 where they will look to end their losing skid against William Paterson University at 3:30 pm at Weequahic Park in Newark, NJ.
