Despite Hot Start, #RUNBB Falls to William Paterson, 10-3

NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers University-Newark baseball scored three runs in the opening stanza before William Paterson halted the Scarlet Raiders' offensive output as William Paterson would go on to win today's New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) clash, 10-3, at Weequahic Park.

Rutgers University-Newark (1-10, 1-10 NJAC) scattered eight hits in the loss and committed an error while leaving 11 batters on base. Armando Alvarez was the lone bright spot for the Scarlet Raiders today, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Michael Masino brought in two runs and finished 1-for-4. Michael Katims (0-1) received his first start of the season today and hurled 4.1 innings, allowing 11 hits with three strikeouts.

William Paterson University (17-5, 8-3) used 18 hits to score 10 runs and left 9 batters on the bases. Matt Ferrara finished 3-for-6 with 3 RBI while Dan Carter went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Jordan Manne (2-2) tossed 5.0 innings of action and allowed six hits and struck out three batters on 85 pitches.

The Scarlet Raiders had one of their best starts to a game this season. Lisandro Ulerio started with a single down the left-field line to get the offense going before Matthew Rypkema laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Ulerio into scoring position. Alvarez then recorded his first hit of the afternoon with an RBI single to left-center to give the Scarlet Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Robert Gonzalez loaded the bases with a single to left field which brought up Masino who doubled down the right-field line to score two runs.

William Paterson answered immediately in the top of the second with three runs of their own. From there, they went on to score in the remaining seven innings minus the 7th & 8th as they were able to figure out the Scarlet Raiders pitching.

Rutgers-Newark will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson at 3:30 pm to finish off their season series.
