#RUNBB Unable To Tame The Ospreys

GALLOWAY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball squad hit the road this morning to take on Stockton University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader. The Ospreys won the twin bill 9-0 and 14-5.

Game 1: Stockton 9, Rutgers-Newark 0

Rutgers University-Newark (1-12, 1-12 NJAC) tallied more hits than the Ospreys, 6-5, but were unable to bring anyone home in the 9-0 loss. Armando Alvarez finished 2-for-4 as did Tony Liggio. Nick Zobian and Chris Suleski each added a hit to their ledger to cap off the offense for the Scarlet Raiders in game one. Luis Matias (0-4) pitched 2.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out three.

Stockton (8-9, 6-7 NJAC) recorded five hits but were walked a total of 9 times. Fabrizzi led the team with two hits in five at-bats with an RBI. Viani (2-1) pitched 6.0 innings of action and allowed four hits and walked four batters while striking out five batters.

After Stockton put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, Rutgers-Newark came out in the top of the second looking to knot the game up. An error allowed the Scarlet Raiders to extend the inning before Liggio doubled down the left-field line to put runners on second and third. Ethan Calcano was patient at the plate and earned a walk to load the bases, however, Lisandro Ulerio would strikeout to end the inning and close the door on the Scarlet Raiders' chance to tie the game up.

Rutgers-Newark would a couple more hits but was unable to take advantage while Stockton continued to add to their tally.

Game 2: Stockton 14, Rutgers-Newark 5

Rutgers University-Newark (1-13, 1-13 NJAC) scored five runs on 9 hits and committed three errors in game two. Zobian finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI while Castro went 2-for-3 with a run scored. David Vasquez (0-1) got the start for the Scarlet Raiders and allowed three hits and six runs before being replaced by Couto.

Stockton (9-9, 7-7 NJAC) scored 14 runs on 12 hits in game two. Fabrizzi, Mihlebach, Swift, and Talbot all tallied two hits for the Ospreys in the win. Winsker (2-1) picked up the win in 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts.

The Scarlet Raiders struck first in game one by scoring a pair of runs at the top of the stanza. Alvarez doubled down the left-field line which moved Matthew Rypkema over to third after he reached via a base on balls. Zobian then hit a 2 RBI single to right-center to give the Scarlet Raiders their first tally of the day.

Stockton, however, answered with six runs in the bottom of the first to put them in the pole position. The Ospreys kept the momentum in their favor over the next two innings as they would go on to score a total of 7 more runs.

Rutgers-Newark got their bats going in the top of the 7th when Miguel Castro hit a lead-off double down the left-field line to spark their offense.  Michael Johns helped bring in a run on a fielder's choice before Kyle Johnson doubled to right field to bring in Johns. In the very next at-bat, Liggio also doubled and brought in Johnson for their third tally of the inning.

The Scarlet Raiders were unable to replicate that inning the rest of the way as the pitching from Stockton kept them at bay.

Rutgers-Newark will return to action Thursday when they travel to Mahwah, NJ to take on Ramapo College.
