Ramapo's Offense Sours Senior Day For The Scarlet Raiders

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders baseball program played their final home game this afternoon at Weequahic Park and honored their five seniors. Ryan Watson, Kyle Johnson, Michael Katims, Adam Thompson, and Michael Matusz were given commemorative pictures for their time spent with Rutgers University-Newark. The Scarlet Raiders were unable to snap their losing skid this afternoon as they fell to the Roadrunners, 25-10 and 9-4 in the doubleheader.

Game 1: Ramapo 25, Rutgers-Newark 10

Rutgers University-Newark (1-14, 1-14 NJAC) was led offensively by Lisandro Ulerio and Armando Alvarez. Both Ulerio and Alvarez tallied three hits while Alvarez batted in a pair of runs. Tony Liggio, Christian Masters, Ethan Calcano and Nick Zobian all added a pair of RBIs each. Micahel Matusz (0-3) started the game for the Scarlet Raiders and threw 32 pitches and allowed four earned runs on three hits with a strikeout.

Ramapo College (9-8, 8-7 NJAC) scattered 21 hits and scored 25 runs in game one of the doubleheader. Justin Grippo went 2-for-5 with 5 RBI to go along with Kellen Hardy's 4 RBI. Andrew Case (1-0) hurled six innings and struck out two while allowing four earned runs.

Ramapo wasted no time putting runs on the board in the opening stanza as they tallied four runs. The Scarlet Raiders would respond with three of their own in the bottom of the 1st. Ulerio hit a lead-off single before Matthew Rypkema reached on a throwing error by the third baseman to put two runners on the bases for Alvarez. Alvarez did what he needed to do and doubled down the left-field line to score a run. Liggio followed suit and picked up an RBI when he grounded out to the shortstop. From there, Zobian added another run with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Alvarez home.

The Roadrunners would score six more runs that spanned the 3rd and the 4th inning while the Scarlet Raiders responded with a run in the bottom of the 3rd. Ramapo further extended their lead in the top of the 6th where they had an offensive explosion and scored 14 runs. The Scarlet Raiders tried to chip away at the lead but were unable to close the gap as they managed just six more runs between the 6th and 9th innings.

Game 2: Ramapo 9, Rutgers-Newark 4

Rutgers University-Newark (1-15, 1-15 NJAC) tallied 7 hits and scored four runs in game two. Liggio was the only Scarlet Raider in game two to record multiple hits as he finished 2-for-5 while Zobian and Calcano each picked up a pair of RBIs. Michael Katims (0-2) tossed 4.0 innings and tallied three strikeouts and allowed six earned runs.

Ramapo (10-8, 9-7 NJAC) played efficient baseball in game two and scored 9 runs on 10 hits. Sean Donaghue went 2-for-4 with 5 RBI while Brian Baranok added another pair. James Garthaffner (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs and tallied 9 strikeouts.

The Scarlet Raiders served as the away team in game two and after posting a zero in the top of the 1st the Roadrunners picked up right where they left off in game one. Donaghue hit a grand slam to put the Roadrunners up 4-0 early. Ramapo added three more runs before the Scarlet Raiders put their stamp on the game.

In the top of the 6th, the Scarlet Raiders initiated a two-out rally that started with Robert Gonzalez's single up the middle. A wild pitch moved both Gonzalez and Andre Tirso over to second and third which set up Calcano for a 2 RBI single to right field.

Rutgers-Newark would score another pair in the top of the 9th as they were unable to complete the comeback necessary to send the game into extra innings.

The Scarlet Raiders are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Jersey City, NJ to take on New Jersey City University at 11:30 am for their final regular-season doubleheader.
