Baseball Splits With TCNJ In Home Opener, 7-5, 18-2

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball program appeared to be headed into extra innings in the opening game of their doubleheader vs The College of New Jersey at Weequahic Park, tied 5-5 with two outs, Adam Thompson completed his red-hot opening game when he lifted the ball over the left field fence for a walk-off victory in stunning fashion. Game two went sideways quickly for the Scarlet Raiders as the Lions jumped out quickly and never looked back.

Game 1 - Rutgers University-Newark 7, The College of NJ 5

Rutgers University-Newark (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) was led by Adam Thompson at the dish today. Thompson went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI while Armando Alvarez finished 2-for-4 with a run and 2 RBI. Robert Gonzalez also had himself a fine outing, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. On the hill, Michael Matusz got the start and struck out three in five innings while Colin Thompson came in for relief and struck out two and picked up the first win of his collegiate career.

The College of NJ (1-5, 0-1 NJAC) was led by Jack Haynes as he went 2-for-5 with a run. Sebastian JnoBaptiste finished the day 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. On the mound, Matt Volpe pitched six innings and struck out 9, however, he allowed five earned runs and picked up the loss.

A pitcher's duel ensued in the first four innings as just two hits were recorded during that stretch. The flood gates finally opened in the fifth inning with the Lions scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Matthew Rypkema collected an RBI when he reached first base which scored Robert Gonzalez from third to cut the lead down to 2-1.

Chris Suleski and Gonzalez each tallied an RBI in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. Suleski hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Thompson while Gonzalez's triple scored Armando Alvarez.

TCNJ responded with a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game up at three. Alvarez hit a crucial 2 RBI single to right-center to increase the Scarlet Raiders' lead to 5-3 in the waning moments of the game. The Lions would once again tie the game up at five before nearly taking the lead, however, their chance was squandered when Cote tried to advance home but was thrown out at home by Rypkema after he received the ball from Thompson in left field.

The Scarlet Raiders quickly collected two outs in the bottom of the 9th before Michael Masino walked to first. Thompson then stepped to the plate and with a 1-1 count tattooed the ball over the left field wall for a walk-off two-run homer to win the game for his team.

Game 2 - The College of NJ 18, Rutgers University-Newark 2

Rutgers University-Newark (1-1, 1-1 NJAC) had Rypkema go 2-for-2 with an RBI while Andre Tirso and Angelo Mascolo both finished 1-for-2 with a run. Luis Matias got the start on the bump for the Scarlet Raiders and struck out three batters and allowed five hits in the loss.

The College of NJ (2-5, 1-1 NJAC) was led by Joe Oczkowski as he went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Ryan Goodall finished 3-for-5 with 4 RBI and a pair of runs scored. Amon pitched well for the Lions in 7 innings of action and struck out 11 in the win.

The Lions scored in all but two innings in game two and the Scarlet Raiders couldn't keep up with that scoring power. After just four innings the Scarlet Raiders found themselves behind 10-0. Down by such a big deficit the Scarlet Raiders tried to muster a comeback as they scored a run in the fifth but were unable to build off of that success as they would go on to score just one more run in the seventh.

TCNJ recorded 20 hits in the second game compared to just seven for the Scarlet Raiders. After a relatively clean game in game one, the Scarlet Raiders committed four errors in the second game which helped extend the Lions' scoring onslaught.

The baseball squad will return to action on Thursday, April 8 for a New Jersey Athletic Conference mid-week doubleheader against Rutgers University-Camden which starts at 3:00 pm at Weequahic Park.
