Baseball Falls To Rutgers-Camden In NJAC Doubleheader, 9-5, 7-4

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball program hosted Rutgers University-Camden this afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Weequahic Park and fell in both games, 9-5, and 7-4. The originally scheduled home and home slate of games were turned into a doubleheader after Rutgers University-Camden's field was not ready to start the season. The decision was made for Rutgers University-Newark to host the doubleheader with the Scarlet Raiders serving as the home team in game one while the Scarlet Raptors served as the home team in game two.

Game 1: Scarlet Raptors 9, Scarlet Raiders 5

Rutgers University-Newark (1-2, 1-2 NJAC) received a multi-hit outing from Adam Thompson (2-for-2) before he exited with an injury and Andre Tirso (2-for-4). Matthew Rypkema finished the game 1-for-1 with a pair of RBI and a walk. On the mound, Colin Thompson hurled five innings and allowed 7 runs on 9 hits with a strikeout.

Rutgers University-Camden (2-7, 1-2 NJAC) had Nick Sylvester finish 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and a run while Danny Vazquez also finished 3-for-5 with 2 RBI. On the mound, Colin Carr picked up the win after throwing 116 pitches and allowing five runs on six hits.

Rutgers-Newark jumped out into the lead quickly in game one, tallying five runs in the first four innings to hold a 5-3 lead. Michael Masino, a patient batter, battled out of a full count and singled before Thompson hit an RBI double to left-center to put the Scarlet Raiders on the board.

In the very next inning, the Scarlet Raiders earned runs from an RBI double from Andre Tirso which scored Robert Gonzalez after he reached via a base on balls. Rypkema then capitalized on Tirso advancing to third on a wild pitch by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field to score Tirso.

After scoring two more runs in the next two innings, the Scarlet Raiders' bats went cold as they were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Rutgers-Camden exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth which proved to be the difference in the game.

Game 2: Scarlet Raptors 7, Scarlet Raiders 4

Rutgers University-Newark (1-3, 1-3, NJAC) was led by Masino's 2-for-3 day at the dish with an RBI while Armando Alvarez finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with a run and was left of the bases three times. Matusz hurled seven innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts while Alex Couto came in for relief and allowed two runs to pick up the loss.

Rutgers University-Camden (3-7, 2-2 NJAC) had Danny Vazquez go 2-for-4 with an RBI while Jesse Gerdes finished 1-for-4 with two RBI. Jack Murphy started for the Scarlet Raptors and pitched seven innings with 8 strikeouts, however, it was Listro that picked up the win in two innings of action.

The Scarlet Raiders wasted no time scoring early as they tallied an early run on an Alvarez RBI single to left-center. Not to be outdone, however, the Scarlet Raptors answered back in the bottom of the first with a run of their own.

Rutgers-Camden would take a 2-1 lead before Alvarez secured another RBI for his team to tie the game back up at two in the top of the third. After two scoreless innings, the Scarlet Raiders jumped back on top when Chris Suleski hit an RBI triple to left field.

Once again Rutgers-Camden responded with a run to tie it up before once again tallying four runs to separate the two squads and carry that to the second win of the afternoon.

The Scarlet Raiders will return to action on Saturday, April 10 when they travel to Glassboro, NJ to take on Rowan University in an NJAC doubleheader starting at 11:30 AM.
