Men's Volleyball Secures Spot In CVC Semifinal With Sweep Of RMC, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | The #4 seeded Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball squad hosted #5 seeded Randolph Macon this afternoon at The Golden Dome for the first round of the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Postseason Tournament. The Scarlet Raiders swept the visiting Yellow Jackets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-15) to advance to the semifinals against top-seeded Southern Virginia on Wednesday, April 7.

Rutgers University-Newark (8-4, 5-3 CVC) was led by Andrew Zaleck who tallied a match-high 17 kills. Nicholas Arce-Cox had the best hitting percentage for the Scarlet Raiders (.400) with five kills while Arvind Kumar finished second on the team with seven kills. Justin Tuohy once again led the team with 30 assists while Matt Nikishin picked up defensive duties with a team-high 9 digs.

Randolph-Macon (4-5, 4-4 CVC) received a team-high 10 kills from Kolby Gibson while Jarrett Carrano was close behind with 9. Cade Terrell tallied a team-high 19 assists.

The Scarlet Raiders trailed 12-9 early on, however, they were able to battle back to tie it up before trading points before the opening set was knotted at 17. A trio of attacking errors by Randolph-Macon paired with two Kumar kills thrust the Scarlet Raiders into the lead, 22-17. The Yellow Jackets, however, responded with a 4-0 run of their own to cut the lead down to just one. Zaleck and Arce-Cox put the Scarlet Raiders within set-point before Kumar closed the door and gave Rutgers-Newark a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two was another close one with both teams trading points for a majority of the set before it was once again tied at 17. The Yellow Jackets inched out in front of the Scarlet Raiders but Zaleck gave his team the lead back, 20-19 before Randolph-Macon was able to gain momentum. A late 3-0 run highlighted by a Robert Long kill gave the Scarlet Raiders a 23-20 lead which propelled them to a 2-0 lead in the match after Tuohy collected a kill to stop the Yellow Jackets resurgence.

Down 8-6 the Scarlet Raiders ripped off a 9-0 run to take a 14-8 lead. The Yellow Jackets couldn't get out of their own way during that run as they recorded seven errors. With that large lead and momentum fully on their side, Rutgers-Newark cruised to a third-set victory to send them to the CVC semifinal round.
