Women's Volleyball Drops Home Opener to Stevens, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad dropped their opening contest, 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-20), this evening against Stevens Institute at The Golden Dome.

The Scarlet Raiders had a good showing from a pair of newcomers in Tracey Ilderis and Jaclyn Shrubsall. Ilderis led the squad with seven kills on 27 attacks while Shrubsall set a team-high 14 assists. Alexa Rivera and Sharon Starling added six and five kills, respectively with Rivera adding a team-high 10 digs.

Rutgers-Newark started off strong and quickly jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Stevens. That lead, however, would not hold as the Ducks waddled their way into the lead.  A Pair of attacking errors by the Ducks would put the Scarlet Raiders ahead by two but Stevens would settle in and go on an 8-1 run to take a 16-11 lead which they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the set.

Stevens would carry that momentum over into the second set where they would cruise to a 2-0 lead in the match after a dominating 25-9 victory. The Scarlet Raiders were unable to find their footing in the second set as anytime they seemed to be leveling out, the Ducks would go on a run.

The women recorded their second-highest kill total of the match in the third and final set (8), but it wasn't enough to force a fourth set as the Ducks were able to slam the door on any comeback attempt. Rutgers-Newark did make a push late in the set, using a 4-1 run to cut it within four but it was too little too late.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Thursday, September 2, when they head to Old Westbury, NY to take on Old Westbury.
