Women's Volleyball Stumbles in Tri-Match

WAYNE, NJ | The women's volleyball team hit the road today to participate in a tri-match at William Paterson this afternoon where they took on Cedar Crest and William Paterson. The Scarlet Raiders started their afternoon off with a five-set loss, 3-2 (25-19, 12-25, 26-24, 20-25, 9-25), to Cedar Crest before dropping their second match of the day against William Paterson in four sets, 3-1 (15-25, 20-25, 25-20, 20-25). 

Match 1: Cedar Crest 3, Rutgers-Newark 2

The Scarlet Raiders were led by Tracey Ilderis on the offensive side as she tallied a team-high 21 kills on 51 attacks. Jaclyn Shrubsall recorded 37 assists in the loss while Saniyiah Richardson led the way with 18 digs. Meredith Moore was a force at the net and tallied a team-high three blocks. 

Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after taking the first set.     The Scarlet Raiders tallied seven team kills in the opening set and hit .033 as a team. 

Cedar Crest took the second set after recording their highest kill tally of the match (13). Rutgers-Newark bounced back to take a 2-1 lead behind 16 kills and a .222 hit percentage. 

The Scarlet Raiders were unable to build off of their momentum from the third set as Cedar Crest would even that match at two before taking down the Scarlet Raiders 15-9 in the fifth set. 

Match 2: William Paterson 3, Rutgers-Newark 1

Sharon Starling highlighted the Scarlet Raiders' offensive sheet in the second match, leading the team with 10 kills. Shrubsall once again paced the team with 22 assists while Alexa Rivera added a team-high 18 digs. Eliana Rivera led the way with three blocks for her team. 

William Paterson took a 2-0 lead in the match after taking the opening two sets before the Scarlet Raiders prevented the sweep by winning the third set to set up a fourth set. The Scarlet Raiders, however, were unable to keep the match going as they would fall in the fourth to fall to 0-3 on the year. 

The Scarlet Raiders will remain on the road and head to Riverdale, NY to take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent 7:00 pm on Tueday.
