#RUNWVB Loses Five-Set Thriller to CMSV, 3-2

RIVERDALE, NY | The Scarlet Raiders women's volleyball squad dropped their fourth straight match this evening, moving their record to 0-4, after they dropped a five-set thriller to the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 3-2 (19-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-17, 12-15).

For the second time this season, the Scarlet Raiders found themselves on the wrong side of a five-set match. After falling behind 0-2 early in the match, the Scarlet Raiders rallied back and leveled the match at two before falling in the fifth and final set of the evening.

Tracey Ilderis paced the Scarlet Raiders with 12 kills on 42 attacks (.167) while adding three blocks to her tally. Sharon Starling was close behind with 10 kills on 47 attacks (.064). Jaclyn Shrubsall led her team with 31 assists and added four kills to go along with her 15 digs. Saniyiah Richardson kept rallies alive for Rutgers-Newark as she led her team with 23 digs.

Rianna Rivera and Dez Brown led the Dolphins with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Madison Gale shined for the Dolphins with 45 assists while Olivia Kane tallied a team-high 19 digs in the win.

After falling behind early in the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders battled back and was able to cut the lead down to just two (16-14) after they benefitted from a service error. The Dolphins, however, would open their lead further with a 5-0 run which would ultimately seal the opening set in favor of CMSV.

Once again CMSV would take an early lead that the Scarlet Raiders would cut down to just three. The Dolphins answered Rutgers-Newark's rally with a 6-1 run to stretch their lead out to 19-11. Rutgers-Newark tried to make a comeback with a 3-0 run in which Ilderis recorded a kill, but it was ended when CMSV going on a 4-1 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

With their backs against the wall, Rutgers-Newark came out on fire in the third set. Determined to not get swept, the Scarlet Raiders played their best set and tallied 11 kills and hit .273 as a team. Rutgers-Newark used a 9-1 run fueled by three kills from Starling to take an 11-2 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

Rutgers-Newark followed up the third set with yet another solid performance, tallying 11 kills while hitting .119 as a squad. Once again another early run by the Scarlet Raiders was too much for the Dolphins to overcome. Rutgers-Newark held a 20-14 lead then used a 5-3 run to tie the match up at two and set up the finale.

The momentum stayed in favor of the Scarlet Raiders early on as they held a 6-4 lead which caused the Dolphins to call a timeout to try to regroup and cool off the surging Scarlet Raiders. Eliana Rivera put the Scarlet Raiders within three points of victory (12-9) with a kill, however, that would be the final point the Scarlet Raiders would record on the night. The Dolphins ended the match on a 6-0 run to steal the win from the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action tomorrow night when they play host to Old Westbury at 7:00 PM at the Golden Dome in Newark, NJ.
