#RUNWVB Takes Down Old Westbury, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team powered past Old Westbury, 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-14), for their first win of the season and to improve to 1-4.

Alexa Rivera led the way for the Scarlet Raiders with eight kills on 20 attacks while Jaclyn Shrubsall paced the team with 21 assists. Saniyiah Richardson put in a quality shift in the backline for the Scarlet Raiders, recording 9 digs in the match. At the net, it was once again Meredith Moore that led the team with a pair of blocks. Sharon Starling added six kills and five service aces in the win.

The Scarlet Raiders had their most efficient set to open the match, hitting .300 with eight kills and just two errors. Rutgers-Newark, backed by kills from Starling and Rivera, jumped out to a 16-6 lead that the Panthers were unable to overcome. Rutgers-Newark, with four games under their belt, found their groove early on and didn't allow Old Westbury to rally.

In the second set, Old Westbury made their best push to try to push the match past three sets, however, Rutgers-Newark's offense was just too potent for the Panthers. After holding an 8-6 lead, Rutgers-Newark used a service ace from Starling and a kill from Rivera to push their lead to 12-6  which was enough to seal the second set.

Once again, the Scarlet Raiders proved they were an immovable force tonight in the third set after scorching out to a 10-3 lead. Shrubsall got the scoring started with three aces. Later in the set, newcomer's Kaiel Maynor and Arisa Khalaj tallied their first collegiate kills to bump their lead up to 20-8.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, September 14 when they take on Stockton for their first NJAC action of the season.
