#RUNWVB Drops NJAC Opener to Stockton

GALLOWAY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team took on Stockton University in their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action of the season tonight and fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-21).

Sharon Starling led the Scarlet Raiders with five kills in the match while Angie Santos paced the team with six assists. Saniyiah Richardson and Starling tallied six digs each, good for the team lead.

The Scarlet Raiders and Ospreys had a back-and-forth battle early in the opening set until the Ospreys used a 7-0 run to take a 14-6 lead. Tracey Ilderis tried to rally her squad with a kill, however, Stock used a 5-1 run to further their lead which eventually led them to close out the frame.

Stockton used the momentum from the first set to carry them to a 8-3 lead in the second stanza. The Scarlet Raiders would cut it to four (14-10) but Stockton would go on another run to extend their lead out of the reach of the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark has been pushing teams the distance this season and it looked like they were about to do it again in the third set. Stockton held a large 20-10 lead before the Scarlet Raiders came roaring back with a 6-0 run towards the end of the frame to cut it to three, (24-21). The Ospreys would close out the match and earn their first NJAC victory of the season.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, September 18 when they travel to Allentown, PA to take on non-conference foes, Muhlenberg College at 11:00 am.
