Catania Extends Scoring Streak As Scarlet Raiders Down Marywood

NEWARK, NJ | Franco Catania's goal-scoring streak extends to five games as the Scarlet Raiders find their way back in the win column after a 3-2 win over Marywood University. Rutgers-Newark improves to 3-3 on the year after the win.

Rock Valian put the first marker on the board for the Scarlet Raiders just six minutes into the game. Catania broke down the defenders along the left wing and curled in a cross which Valian was able to head home to give his squad a 1-0 lead. 10 minutes later, Marywood would level the game but the tie would not last long.

One minute after kick-off, Ryan Caruso capitalized on a breakdown by the Pacers' defense and tucked his show into the net to put his team on top once again. The Scarlet Raiders' offensive onslaught wasn't finished just yet, as Catania buried a shot into the back of the net to put his team up 3-1 in the 19th minute.

Brandon Castro had an opportunity in the second half to add a tally to the Scarlet Raiders' score but saw his shot bounce off of the crossbar and away from harm. Mason Guelho brought Marywood within one in the 56th minute when he found himself on the end of a free-kick which he was able to head past Christian Andrach who got the start between the pipes this evening. Andrach made several saves after that late in the game as Marywood threatened to tie the game up but due to Andrach's saves, they were unable to do so.

The Scarlet Raiders will now prepare for their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action of the season.
