#RUNWVB Shutdown Undefeated NJCU, 3-1

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad traveled across the bridge to take on New Jersey City University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match. The Scarlet Raiders marched into Jersey City and ended NJCU's unbeaten streak with a 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 16-25, 25-22). With the win, the Scarlet Raiders moved to 2-7, 1-1 NJAC.

Sharon Starling paced the Scarlet Raiders with 11 kills on 43 attacks while Jaclyn Shrubsall collected 22 assists in the win. Shrubsall also led the team with 15 digs with Eliana Rivera leading the way with three blocks.

In the opening stanza, the Scarlet Raiders saw themselves fall behind early but used a 4-0 run late to tie the set up at 18. Down one, 23-22, Rivera recorded a kill while Rebekah Barnes served up an ace to aid the Scarlet Raiders' 5-1 run to seal the opening set.

The second set saw the Scarlet Raiders jump out to a large 16-8 lead. The Gothic Knights made an effort late to push the set past the 25 limit, however, a service error paired with a kill by Starling would shut the door on any comeback attempt by the Gothic Knights.

The Gothic Knights wouldn't go quietly as they would take the third set.  The set was flip-flopping back and forth until NJCU used a 12-2 run to jump in the driver's seat and push the match to a fourth set.

In the fourth set, the Scarlet Raiders would rebound and use a late 4-1 run to steal a road win and hand NJCU their first loss of the season.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action Tuesday, September 28 when they host Montclair University at 7:00 pm.
