#RUNWVB Struggles Against Montclair

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad was unable to carry their momentum over from their win against NJCU tonight as they dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match to Montclair University, 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-18). The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 2-8 and 1-2 in the NJAC.

Sharon Starling once again led the Scarlet Raiders with seven kills while Tracey Ilderis was close behind with five. Jaclyn Shrubsall finished with 15 assists on the night with Saniyiah Richardson pacing the team with 13 digs.

In the opening stanza, this evening the Scarlet Raiders and Red Hawks traded points early on until Montclair used a 7-1 run to extend their lead. Ilderis broke up the streak with a kill and tried to rally her squad but they were unable to handle the offensive power of the Red Hawks. Montclair would close out the set with a 7-0 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set didn't go as planned for the Scarlet Raiders as they fell behind 8-2 quickly. The Red Hawks wouldn't allow the Scarlet Raiders to gain any momentum as Montclair ripped off another 8-0 run to push their lead out to 16-2 before eventually closing the set with a 5-2 run. Starling and Eliana Rivera picked up kills late in the set but were unable to rally the Scarlet Raiders as they fell 2-0 in the match.

Once again Montclair jumped out to a large lead quickly, however, late in the set the Scarlet Raiders found their footing and made a comeback attempt. Down 22-13, the Scarlet Raiders went on a 5-1 run to cut the lead down to just five. Montclair, however, would record two straight points to close out the NJAC contest.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, September 29 when they travel to the Bronx, NY to take on Lehman College in non-conference action.
