Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Washington College, 3-2

CHESTERTOWN, MD | The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team dropped their opener this afternoon, 3-2, to Washington College (Md.) in the first day of the Athey Cup.

The Scarlet Raiders took 11 shots in the game and found the back of the net twice in the first half. Washington College fired off 23 shots and put 10 of them on target. Andres Medina put in a busy shift between the pipes for Rutgers-Newark and made seven saves while allowing three goals.

Juwan Ash was first to put his name in the ledger with a goal in the 25th minute of the first half. Joshua Breton-Jones found Ash with a pass and Ash made no mistake and tucked it home to give the Scarlet Raiders a 1-0 lead.

20 minutes later, the Scarlet Raiders would strike again. This time it was freshman Aslan Kat who placed a penalty kick into the net to give the Scarlet Raiders a 2-0 lead with halftime looming. Washington College wouldn't be held scoreless on their home turf in the first half as just before the halftime whistle, Chris Comber was able to sneak it past Medina to send Washington into the half with some momentum.

Out of the break, the Scarlet Raiders couldn't regain their momentum from the first half as Washington College would add two to their tally, a free-kick and a header from a corner kick, to pull away with a 3-2 lead.

The men will remain in Chestertown, PA and will take on DeSales tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm in the second day of the Athey Cup.
