Second Half Surge Lifts #RUNMSOC Past DeSales, 4-2

CHESTERTOWN, MD | A three-goal second-half outburst by the Scarlet Raiders lifts them past DeSales, 4-2, in the Athey Cup. Rutgers University-Newark moves to 1-1 on the year after the win.

The Scarlet Raiders held DeSales to just six shots in the game while taking 22 of their own and putting 13 on target. Franco Catania led the way with six shots while Ryan Caruso fired off five of his own putting four on target. Both Catania and Caruso scored a brace in the win for Rutgers-Newark to give them their first win of the year.

Rutgers-Newark found themselves down 1-0 after just 53 seconds into the game when DeSales headed in a goal for an early lead. The Scarlet Raiders would level the game in the 22nd minute when Caruso received a pass from Miguel Sencion and hit it into the upper netting.

The game would remain in a stalemate at the half with the Scarlet Raiders holding a 9-3 edge in shots.

10 minutes into the second half, DeSales would strike again,  this time a blunder from the Scarlet Raiders defensive unit allowed Dimeji Oyinkolade to slip his shot past Medina to give his side a 2-1 lead.

Jonah Dias found Franco Catania who was able to chip it over Tyler Horton to once again bring the game back to even. A 10-minute span would go by before Rutgers-Newark once again found the back of the net. This time it was Caruso heading it home off of a cross from Joshua Breton-Jones to give the Scarlet Raiders their first lead of the game.

Rutgers-Newark wouldn't stay complacent and added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. Breton-Jones found Catania in the middle of the box where he was able to score a similar goal to his teammate, Caruso, just six minutes earlier.

The Scarlet Raiders will now head to Hoboken, NJ to take on Stevens at 4:00 pm.
