Bring Out The Brooms! #RUNMBB Sweeps NJCU with 72-63 Win

NEWARK, NJ | Everyone has their favorites in life and Quincy Rutherford enjoys playing against New Jersey City University this season. Rutherford and Rutgers-Newark brought out the brooms tonight after defeating NJCU, 72-63, at The Golden Dome to complete the regular-season sweep.

Rutherford led the way for Rutgers-Newark (11-5,8-2) with 24 points after shooting 4-for-7 from three and 6-for-15 from the floor. Abe Kromah followed his 17-point outing against Stockton up with another 17 point outing tonight while adding a team-high three steals. Jamir Patterson added 14 points while Dante Ralph protected the painted area with 9 rebounds.

For NJCU (9-8,6-4) it was Denzel Banks with a team-high 16 points. Jason Battle added 10 points while Kayton Darley recorded seven points and a team-high 9 rebounds.

Quincy Rutherford continues to love playing against New Jersey City University as he seemingly couldn't miss from behind the arc in the first half. Rutherford led all scorers with 13 points in the first half en route to a 38-25 lead in favor of the Scarlet Raiders. Jamir Patterson and Abe Kromah were able to play off of Rutherford and wiggle their way to the interior to cash their checks. Rutgers-Newark's 13th ranked defense was on full display in the first half, feeding off of the offensive energy, which helped them go on a 10-4 run that lasted three minutes and pushed their lead out to 27-14.

NJCU began to gain momentum towards the end of the first half, chipping away at their deficit, however, Rutgers-Newark was able to withstand the waves of attacks to take a 13-point lead into the half.

In the second half, NJCU found success with the full-court press which forced the Scarlet Raiders into 16 turnovers in the game. After behind held to just 25 points in the first half by the Rutgers-Newark's suffocating defense, NJCU was able to penetrate that armor to the tune of 38 second-half points. The Scarlet Raiders were up to the task as they scored 34 of their own to keep NJCU from stealing a crucial NJAC win.

With 5:25 to go, NJCU made it a six-point game, the closest they came in the second half, however, a Ralph layup paired with two free points from the charity stripe by Jordan Salisbury, the Scarlet Raiders quickly bumped their lead back up to double digits where they were able to keep it for the majority of the remaining time on the clock.

Up Next:
The Scarlet Raiders will look to string two NJAC wins together when they travel to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson at 3:00 pm.
