#RUNMVB Splits Season Opener at Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ | The #9 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball squad opened their season tonight in a tri-match held at Ramapo College. The Scarlet Raiders swept Ramapo, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 30-28) before falling to #2 Springfield, 3-1 (26-24, 18-25, 23-25, 16-25).

Match 1: #9 Rutgers-Newark 3, Ramapo 0

Rutgers-Newark (1-0) was led by Arvind Kumar's 12 kills with Andrew Zaleck not far behind with 11. Derek Au paced the team with 30 assists while Matt Nikishin sat top of the chart with 13 digs. Eric Hollenbach tallied a team-high four blocks while Au added three. 

Ramapo (0-1) received eight kills from Sean Nieves and five blocks from Conor Charlow.

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders fell behind 6-2 before answering with a 7-1 run to take the lead. Once hopping into the driver's seat, the Scarlet Raiders didn't look in the rearview mirror as they kept the Roadrunners at bay to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Rutgers-Newark fell behind to open the set, only this time it took until later in the set for them to grab hold of the lead. Down one, Kumar secured a kill to knot it up at 20 before recording a service ace to put his team in front. After a service error to tie the set, Rutgers-Newark used a 4-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set went back-and-forth and took more than 25 points to secure the win. Zaleck picked up a pair of kills to put his squad within one of the win which allowed Daniel Quay to pick up the final kill of the match. 

Match 2: #2 Springfield 3, #9 Rutgers-Newark 1

Rutgers-Newark (1-1) was led by Hollenbach who secured 10 kills while Zaleck and Kumar finished with eight and seven, respectively. Au once again led the way with 28 assists while Elan Dorkhman picked up a team-high seven digs. 

Springfield (2-0) picked up 13 kills from Jarrett Anderson and 32 assists from Matt Lilley. 

After flip-flopping back-and-forth early in the set, the Scarlet Raiders dug their feet in and took control of the set with a pair of kills from Kumar followed by a service ace from Hollenbach. Springfield went on an 8-1 run towards the end of the set to push it past 25, however, Zaleck would secure the final point to put Rutgers-Newark up 1-0. 

Halfway through the second set, the Scarlet Raiders held a 12-11 lead before Springfield went on an 11-1 run to grab hold of the lead that they refused to relinquish. 

Once again, the Scarlet Raiders came out strong to take a 9-4 lead over Springfield. After the set was knotted up at 13 the teams would battle, swapping points along the way until Springfield hopped in front, 20-18. Rutgers-Newark cut the deficit down to 24-23, however, Springfield would close out the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. 

In the fourth and final set, Springfield was able to take the lead and hold onto it as the Scarlet Raiders were unable to get their offense going as they would record their lowest point total of the day.

The Scarlet Raiders will return to action on Saturday, January 29 where they will host #6 Messiah at 1:00 pm in Newark, NJ.
