#RUNMSOC Drops Top of NJAC Clash Against Montclair

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer squad found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-0 scoreline when they battled #13 Montclair State University this evening. The clash between the top two teams in the NJAC dropped the Scarlet Raiders down to 6-5-3, 3-1-1 while Montclair remained unbeaten in conference play 10-1-3, 5-0.

The Scarlet Raiders possessed the ball for the opening 20 minutes of the first half and put Montclair on their heels. Marlon Rodriguez had Rutgers-Newark's two finest chances on net in the first 20 minutes, hitting both of his shots just wide of goal. As the game wore on, the Red Hawks began to settle in and with 16 minutes remaining in the first half they broke down the Scarlet Raiders' defense to find their first goal of the game. Josiah Crawford flew down the left wing and hit a shot that was initially parried away by Christian Andrach. The ball landed at the foot of Adan Franco who tapped in his first collegiate goal to put the Red Hawks up 1-0.

At the half, the squads were locked at eight shots each, however, it was the Scarlet Raiders, despite trailing 1-0, who put three shots on target.

Jonah Dias tried to convert a set piece with 15 minutes remaining from 19 yards out, however, his shot was just too high. The Scarlet Raiders would go down to 10 men in the 80th minute when Bryan Rodriguez was the last man on defense and committed a foul. Playing down a man wouldn't deter the Scarlet Raiders from pushing forward as they nearly tied the game up after two shots were saved by Shane Keenan. Montclair doubled their tally in the 86th minute when Josiah Crawford beat Andrach on a low-driven shot.
