Rutgers-Newark Falls to Montclair in NJAC Bout

MONTCLAIR, NJ | Alexa Rivera recorded a team-high six kills in a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-13) loss to Montclair in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 0-16, 0-7 while the Red Hawks are 12-11, 4-4.

The Scarlet Raiders' offense stalled in the opening stanza as they secured just four kills on 25 attacks. Montclair on the other hand opened the match with their best performance of the night. The Red Hawks tallied 14 kills and hit .303 in the 25-11 win. The Scarlet Raiders went back and forth with the Red Hawks, keeping pace with the set tied at eight. Montclair then went on a 12-3 run to propel them in front to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, Rutgers-Newark secured eight kills, however, their 11 errors prevented them from getting ahead of the Red Hawks. The Scarlet Raiders trailed by four and looked to be surging until Montclair went on a 7-0 run to take hold of the set. Rivera tried to bring her team back in the set with a pair of kills but Montclair was too strong which carried them to a 2-0 lead in the match.

Saniyiah Richardson picked up a service ace in the third set to tie the set up at 7 before the Scarlet Raiders eventually took the lead after an error by the Red Hawks. That error sparked the Red Hawks' offense as they went on a 12-0 run that closed out the set and gave them a home win against an NJAC foe.
