#RUNWVB Earns First Win of the Season Over Old Westbury

NEWARK, NJ | Alexa Rivera tallied 12 kills in the Scarlet Raiders' first win of the season over Old Westbury, 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 25-13, 25-21). The win also marks the first for interim head coach, Aidan Albrecht. The win improves the Scarlet Raiders to 1-16 while Old Westbury drops to 5-8.

The Scarlet Raiders and Panthers battled in a non-conference bout on Saturday afternoon and after trailing by four, the Scarlet Raiders took the lead 12-11. A late surge by the Scarlet Raiders led by Alexa Rivera pushed their lead to 16-12, forcing Old Westbury to call a timeout to try to cool off their opponents. The Scarlet Raiders remained strong and kills by Aliyah Sanchez and Rivera made sure to keep the Scarlet Raiders ahead. A pair of attacking errors by Old Westbury handed the opening set to the Scarlet Raiders to put them up 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, both teams went back and forth in the beginning before Old Westbury took a slight edge. The Panthers held the Scarlet Raiders at bay for the rest of the set as they would take the second set by a similar score in the opening set. With the Panthers win, the match was tied at one.

Rutgers-Newark came out with a purpose in the third set and quickly jumped out to a 6-3 lead over Old Westbury. Rutgers-Newark continued to build upon that lead and eventually led 12-5 thanks to an ace by Kaiel Maynor. Old Westbury was in catch up mode for the rest of the set, but they were unable to complete the comeback as the Scarlet Raiders offense was firing on all cylinders which included a kill by Maryann Ijeh to close out the set.

The Scarlet Raiders held a slight lead in the fourth set, however, the Panthers came roaring back to take a 14-12 lead. Rutgers-Newark regained the lead when they used a 5-1 run to propel them into the lead 21-17. Alexis Jones led the team with a kill during that run. The Panthers strung together a pair of points before Aliyah Sanchez slammed the door shut to earn their first win of the season.
