Catania Strikes Again: #RUNMSOC Defeats Kean, 2-1

NEWARK, NJ | Catania's late-game heroics once again lift the Scarlet Raiders past Kean, 2-1, in a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) showdown. The win, on senior night, bumps the Scarlet Raiders up to 7-6-4, 4-2-2 while Kean moves downward to 6-7-4, 2-3-3. Before the game, the four Scarlet Raiders seniors, George Olynyk, Christian Andrach, Joe Alba, and Franco Catania were honored with commemorative photos.

The Scarlet Raiders went back and forth in the first half, with neither team able to break through. Christian Andrach was active on the back line in the first half, frequently coming out of his box to make clearances and keep Kean from getting open shots.

At the half, the Scarlet Raiders held a 7-5 edge in shots while Kean was called for five offsides.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on the Cougars which eventually led to the game's opening goal. Patrick O'Dwyer was inserted into the second half and made an instant impact. He used his height to create mismatches against the Cougar defense. O'Dwyer eventually broke through the defense and sidestepped Dominic Ridge who took out O'Dwyer for a penalty kick. Franco Catania stepped up to the spot and beat Ridge for his 15th goal of the season to put the Scarlet Raiders up 1-0 with 25 minutes to go.

With 18 minutes remaining on the clock, Santi Alzate took a pass from Kelvin Gyamfi and beat Andrach low to the left side to knot the game up at one. Marlon Rodriguez made an overlapping run and received a pass from Catania and nearly snuck a shot in the near post. Catania, with under two minutes to go, pulled a rabbit out of the hat and hit an absolute stunner of a shot that found its way into the upper right corner for his second goal of the game and to put his squad up 2-1. Kean pushed forward in the final moments, however, Rutgers-Newark's defense stood strong as they walked away with three NJAC points.
