Men's Soccer Upset in NJAC Quarterfinal

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team fell to #5 seeded Rutgers University-Camden this evening at Frederick Douglass Field in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Quarterfinal. The Scarlet Raiders moved to 7-6-6 while Rutgers-Camden moved to 6-5-6.

The first half saw plenty of action from the Scarlet Raiders' offense. Ryan Caruso threatened early and often early in the first half, seeing two chances inch by the post. Rutgers-Newark edged out Rutgers-Camden 13-2 in the opening stanza as the Scarlet Raiders' offense came out with a point to prove. Despite the barrage of attacks, Rutgers-Camden's defense braved the constant waves and went into the half with a 0-0 draw.

After the ferocious pace of play in the first half, the pace slowed down in the second as both teams had an idea of what each other was trying to do. Momentum began to swing in favor of Rutgers-Camden as they began gaining possession in Rutgers-Newark's finale third. The two counterparts from opposite ends of New Jersey played to a stalemate after 90 minute of action, sending the game into extra time.

Patrick O'Dwyer almost gave the Scarlet Raiders a 2-1 lead in the second extra time, however, his shot just went just wide of the post and out of play. After 110 minutes of play the score remained knotted at 0-0 and play went into penalty kicks. When play went to penalty kicks, it was Rutgers-Camden who came out victorious after not missing a kick from the spot.
