#RUNWVB Falls in Four Sets to Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad dropped a four-set non-conference match to Gwynedd Mercy this evening, 3-1 (25-22, 25-11, 25-22, 25-20). The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 0-12 while Gwynedd Mercy improved to 6-11.

The Scarlet Raiders had their best outing of the match in the opening set. Rutgers-Newark recorded 12 kills and hit .235 as a team. Kaiel Maynor led the Scarlet Raiders with 11 kills with Alexa Rivera close behind with 10. With the set tied at 17, Gwynedd Mercy went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Rutgers-Newark tried to scratch their way back, however, the Griffins closed out the set to go up 1-0 in the match.

Rutgers-Newark's offense went dormant in the second set, as they scored just 11 points. Down the stretch, the Griffins used a 9-1 run to go up 2-0 at home.

For just the third time this season, the Scarlet Raiders took a set from their opponent. Rutgers-Newark fell behind early but went on a 6-0 run that started with a Rivera kill to go up 16-12. The Griffins made a push at the end of the set but an attacking error sent the set over to the Scarlet Raiders.

In the fourth, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to build off of their momentum from the previous set as they would fall 3-1.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, October 8 when they travel to Farmingdale, NY to take on Farmingdale.
