Catania Scores Game Winner Against TCNJ

EWING, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders men's soccer team returned to the win column on Saturday afternoon after defeating The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action, 2-1. A late goal by Franco Catania was the nail in the coffin which bumped the Scarlet Raiders up to 6-4-3, 3-0-1 while knocking TCNJ down to 6-6-1, 1-3. 

In the first half of play, the Scarlet Raiders rifled off eight shots to four for TCNJ. Despite the offensive prowess, neither team was able to find the back of the net. Right before the half time whistle, Catania almost changed the halftime talks with a goal, but his shot was blocked. 

Out of the half, the Scarlet Raiders had a new sense of urgency which nearly led to a goal. Catania hit his shot off of the post before Jake Milne's shot was block away from harm. Shortly after that frantic play in front of net, Marlon Rodriguez opened the scoring ledger for Rutgers-Newark. In spectacular fashion, Rodriguez curled a shot from the left side into the upper right corner to give his squad a 1-0 lead over the Lions. 

TCNJ would tie it up on a penalty kick 11 minutes later. Christian Andrach stonewalled the first attempt only to be issued a yellow card for stepping off of the line. Zaun of TCNJ made no mistake to miss his second attempt to level the playing field. 

Once again, it was Catania who saved Rutgers-Newark. With the time ticking away, he collected the loose ball in the box from a corner kick and hit a low driven shot into the left side netting for what would turn into the game-winning goal. Sebastian Hernandez of TCNJ tried to salvage a point from today's contest but hit his shot wide of target in the 82nd minute. After that, the Scarlet Raiders sured up their back line to walk away with the three points.
